The world has changed and this change will be continuous

“Leadership can and should be taught”. Peter F. Drucker

“Leadership is the ability to guide and give example to others”

We are involved in a period of constant organisational change, where the future is progressively more uncertain and the role of people is increasingly more important for the success of organisations.

Many industries today face the exigencies of mergers and consolidation of resources in order to improve efficiency and competitiveness in the global marketplace. Yet, in order to remain competitive, these larger companies have to allow smaller, goal specific groups to form in order to identify the primary drivers in the future and adapt to the new environment.

There exists the misperception that Leadership is an innate characteristic which cannot be taught or learned. This is simply not true. While some people may be defined as “born leaders”, many others develop and nurture leadership qualities and attributes over time through experience, training and education.

The Change from Managing to Leading

The new global environment demands a change in our organisational culture

From:

  • Reacting to change
  • Doing things well
  • Accepting rules/policies
  • Asking how and where
  • Avoiding risk
  • Having stable hierarchies
  • Working alone
  • Having one culture/style
  • Having well-defined job descriptions

To:

  • Looking for change
  • Doing what has to be done
  • Challenging rules for improvement
  • Asking what and why
  • Supporting risk-taking
  • Promoting flexible and adaptable structures
  • Establishing networks, alliances, partnerships
  • Adapting to the environment
  • Allowing one to define his/her own role

Such organisational changes can be implemented by Top Management only through the collaboration of many people that LEAD the change.
